The country of Pakistan witnessed a nightmarish incident last night. Gunmen disguised as police guards attacked a terminal at Pakistan's busiest airport on Sunday with machine guns and a rocket launcher during a five-hour siege that killed 13 people as explosions echoed into the night, officials said. The Jinnah international airport was later cordoned by the authorities to safeguard the surroundings. Pakistani media, reported at least 23 people were killed, including all 10 of the attackers.

The airport attack began late Sunday at around 11 pm and continued on into the dawn hours of Monday till 4:30 am in Karachi, a sprawling port city on Pakistan's southern coast, although officials said all the passengers had been evacuated. The appalling incident was far from over as it unexpectedly regained motion again at 9 am, the next Monday morning. During the course of the attack, heavy gunfire and multiple explosions could be heard coming from the terminal, used for VIP flights and cargo, as militants and security forces battled for control.

The deadly operation was carried out by 10 militants, said the chief minister of Sindh province, Qaim Ali Shah.
"They were well trained. Their plan was very well thought out," he told reporters. He said they intended to destroy some of the aircraft and buildings but were not able to.

The spokesman for the Pakistani military, Gen. Asim Bajwa, said on Twitter that no aircraft were damaged and that as a precautionary measure, security forces were sweeping the airport before operations would be returned to the civil aviation authority and airport police.

Television footage showed a loud explosion inside the old airport terminal while heavy firing also continued to go on.

A source said the militants had also carried out hand grenade attack on the Isphani Hanger.

The attackers are said to have forged fake ID cards of ASF and entered the area.

The staff is being rescued by the security personnel and moved to safer areas, reports said, adding that rescue teams are being allowed after being checked thoroughly.

The militants are said to have entered from the Fokker gate which is used by engineering staff to go to the runaway and hangers.
Authorities diverted incoming flights and suspended all flight operations. A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority said the airport would be closed until at least Monday night.

The identities of the militants are still not completely known along with their reason for perpetrating the attack. The most frightening question still remains- was Karachi their final target?
